2026-2027 Pennsylvania Deer Season Overview

Pennsylvania remains a top-tier deer hunting destination, with one of the highest numbers of hunters in the nation. The Pennsylvania Game Commission (PGC) manages deer across 23 Wildlife Management Units (WMUs), each with specific antlerless deer tag allocations and antler point restrictions.

Pennsylvania Deer License & Permit Costs

Pennsylvania uses an add-on license system. You start with a general hunting license, then purchase separate privileges for archery, muzzleloader, or other methods.

Important: You need a separate antlerless deer license for each WMU where you want to harvest an antlerless deer. Antlerless allocations are distributed through a multi-round application system. Apply early — popular WMUs sell out in Round 1.

Wildlife Management Units (WMUs) — What You Need to Know

Pennsylvania divides the state into 23 WMUs, each with its own antler point restrictions, antlerless allocations, and in some cases unique season dates.

Antler Point Restrictions by WMU:

• WMUs 1A, 1B, 2A, 2B, 2G: Three points on one side, with additional restrictions on spread or beam length. These are higher-density areas where the PGC aims to protect younger bucks.
• All Other WMUs: Three points on one side rule applies. Any buck with at least three points on one antler is legal.
• Exemptions: Hunters under 15 years old and senior license holders (65+) are exempt from antler point restrictions statewide.

High-Priority WMUs for Antlerless Tags:

WMUs 2B, 5C, and 5D (southeastern PA urban/suburban zones) consistently have the highest antlerless allocations due to deer overpopulation and crop damage complaints. These WMUs also get the earliest archery opener (September 19) and extended archery seasons.

Sunday Hunting in Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania expanded Sunday hunting starting in 2020. For the 2026-2027 season, the PGC has approved 13 Sundays for hunting, spread across archery, firearms, and late seasons.

Key Sunday dates to know:

• Three Sundays during archery season (October and November)
• One Sunday during regular firearms (typically the first Sunday of the two-week season)
• Multiple Sundays during late archery/flintlock (December through January)

Note: Sunday hunting is only permitted on private land, state game lands, and other public lands that have opted in. Not all public lands allow Sunday hunting — verify before you go. The full list of approved Sundays is published annually in the PGC Hunting & Trapping Digest at pgc.pa.gov.

CWD Management and Disease Surveillance Areas

Pennsylvania has active Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) Disease Management Areas (DMAs) in several WMUs, primarily in the south-central region. If you harvest a deer within a DMA:

• Mandatory reporting within 24 hours is required at a CWD check station or via the PGC online reporting system.
• Carcass transport restrictions apply — you cannot move whole carcasses out of the DMA without first having them checked.
• Feeding and baiting bans are enforced year-round in all DMAs.

The current DMAs include portions of WMUs 2C, 4A, 4B, 4D, and 5A. Check the PGC website for the latest DMA boundary maps before your hunt.

Practical Tips for Pennsylvania Deer Hunters

Scouting and Access: Pennsylvania has over 1.5 million acres of State Game Lands (SGLs) open to public hunting. The PGC maintains detailed maps of every SGL on their website, including parking areas, food plots, and boundary markers. For firearms season, arrive early — popular SGLs see heavy pressure on opening day.

Weather and Terrain: November firearms season in Pennsylvania means cold, often wet conditions. Expect temperatures in the 20s to 40s (°F) with potential snow in the northern tier. The terrain varies dramatically from the flat farmlands of southeastern PA to the rugged Allegheny Plateau in the north-central region.

Deer Check-In: All deer harvested in Pennsylvania must be reported through the PA Hunt mobile app or the PGC website within 10 days of harvest. You must also physically tag your deer with the appropriate tag before moving it from the harvest location.
