Free License Eligibility Quiz
Answer 4 quick questions to see if you qualify for a free or discounted hunting license in your state.
Step 1 of 4
Which state do you live in?
Exemptions are almost always limited to state residents.
How the Eligibility Quiz Works
Our quiz walks you through 4 targeted questions to check if you qualify for any hunting license exemptions in your state. Here's what we check:
- Your state of residence — Exemptions are almost always limited to state residents. Your home state determines which exemption programs are available.
- Your age — Many states offer free or discounted licenses for youth (under 16–18) and seniors (65+). Some senior exemptions kick in as early as age 60.
- Military and veteran status — Active duty military and disabled veterans qualify for significant discounts or free licenses in most states. VA disability ratings often determine benefit levels.
- Land ownership — About 30 states allow resident landowners to hunt on their own property without a general hunting license, though tags and stamps usually still apply.

This quiz uses exemption data from each state's official wildlife agency website, verified as of the 2025-2026 license year. Eligibility requirements can change — always confirm with your state agency before purchasing.
Even if you qualify for a license exemption, remember that species-specific tags, federal duck stamps, and harvest reporting requirements usually still apply. Check our Free Hunting License by State page for complete details on every state's exemption program.
