What This Calculator Checks

Our age calculator cross-references your state's hunting regulations to answer three critical questions:

  1. Do they need a hunting license? — Many states offer free hunting for youth under a certain age. Some don't require any license with adult supervision. We show you the exact requirements and cost.
  2. Is hunter education required? — Most states require hunter education certification between ages 10 and 16. We tell you if the hunter is old enough to need it, or if they can hunt under a mentored program.
  3. Is adult supervision required? — Nearly all states require an accompanying licensed adult for youth hunters. We clarify the supervision rules for the hunter's specific age.

Common Age Thresholds Across States

While every state is different, these age milestones come up again and again in hunting regulations:

Under 10

Most states allow hunting with direct adult supervision. Hunter education not yet required. Many states offer free hunting at this age.

Ages 10–12

Hunter education typically becomes required. Many states begin requiring a youth hunting license at 10 or 12. Supervision still mandatory.

Ages 12–16

Most states require both a license and hunter ed. Supervision may relax from arm's reach to within sight/sound. Firearms privileges expand.

Ages 16–18

Youth transitions to adult licensing in many states. Supervision requirements usually end at 16. Full hunting privileges in most states by 18.
